Shared Cost Sidewalk Program

Chicago Department of Transportation

Shared Cost Sidewalk Program

The Shared Cost Sidewalk Program is a voluntary program in which property owners and the City of Chicago share the cost of replacing sidewalks.

Through the program, owners pay part of the cost of replacing the sidewalk in front of their property. The City pays the other part of that cost as well as for any extra required work, such as courtesy walks, carriage walks, handicapped ramps, and curb and gutter. On non-commercial corner properties, four units or less, the City also pays for the non-address side of the property.

Property owners pay a set square foot cost: $2.25. Qualifying senior citizens and those with disabilities pay half that rate: $1.12. Those prices are significantly below what a private company would charge. The City can offer that attractive price because of the volume of work we do. Offering set prices ensures that all owners pay the same price, no matter where they live.

Who is eligible to participate?

All property owners and/or occupants of non-vaulted sidewalks are eligible to participate.

Does that include commercial properties?

Yes, although corner commercial properties must share the cost for both sides of the property, and are not eligible for the senior or disabled discount.

Who is eligible for the senior/disabled rate at $1.12?

Senior owner-occupants of non-commercial properties of four units or less and/or disabled owner-occupants who qualify for the State of Illinois Circuit Breaker Exemption.

What information is required to receive the senior/disabled rate?

Senior must provide proof of age, ownership, and occupancy.

Ownership-tax bill (2nd installment) or title deed

Age-birth certificate or driver's license or 2nd installment tax bill showing senior exemption

Occupancy-voter's card or utility bill

Seniors must also sign an affidavit verifying their age

Disabled persons must provide copy of Circuit Breaker Exemption

Proof of senior/disabled eligibility should be sent to 2350 W. Ogden, Chicago, IL 60608. CDOT will then send out a revised bill showing the reduced cost.

How does the process work?

An interested homeowner fills out an application (either written or electronic) and sends it to the City.

Chicago Department of Transportation surveys the area to determine the scope of reconstruction. While visiting the site, CDOT also surveys the neighboring properties on the block.

CDOT sends a detailed bill for work to be constructed to all surveyed properties. If interested, mail payment to the City's Department of Revenue.

The work will begin as soon as possible. The construction season runs from May to November.Payments received after August 15th may be completed the following year.
